Skype is taking over the globe, one free call at a time. It's now taken a second major leap into the wireless market in just a few short weeks. They have recently unveiled software from Top phone maker Nokia Oyj which could run on more than 200 million smartphones around the world. The new Skype for Symbian software is available for free download from Nokia's Ovi Store to consumers globally.
You must be wondering, if you're not a technology junkie, what leap did Skype take originally? Skype made its first major leap into cellphones in mid February, striking a deal with the largest US mobile carrier Verizon Wireless. There is no stopping this gravy train, Skype already has 520 million registered users and has been the biggest thing since slice bread since it started in 2003. Free calls on your computer? on your phone? who knew?
Although these are major steps for the Skype team, it's been a tough nut to crack. Most telecommunication operators have seen our much beloved Skype as a threat to their core business of voice calls. But it seems times are a changing. I'm even tempted to say, maybe Oprah is the catalyst for this, because we all know, once you're on Oprah, everyone wants a piece of you. (wink)
