As I made my may through the center of the Mother City this morning, something caught my eye.It was an enormous number 17 I saw on a billboard, perched up on one of Cape Towns best known city off ramps. The fact that 17 is my favorite number had nothing to do with it, I just couldn't take my eyes off the large red digits. It could have something to do with a memory I have from the year 2004. It seems like only yesterday I was pouring pints of beer in a sports bar, when it was announced that South Africa would host the Football World Cup in 2010. The regulars cheered and informed me that it was going to be a great event in the history of our country, especially for South African sport. Six years have passed and here I was driving passed a promotional symbol, which told me that the first kick off was just over 2 weeks away. It's crazy to think that the World Cup is here already, it feels like only yesterday that I first heard the news.
I took a moment to think about how much things have changed in my life since then and all the work that has gone into preparation for the World Cup, then it hit me like a sack of bricks. Back in 2004 I had never heard of social networking! Well put it this way.I certainly didn't think that when this tournament eventually took place on my home turf, that I would be able to log onto a site like Hummba.com, upload my own personal pictures with the use of my mobile and see what star players Benni Mcarthy and Matthew Booth have to say about all the action on and off the football pitch. Yes, you heard right for those of you who've been in the dark for the past few weeks, you may be interested to know that two Bafana Bafana players are on board with us here at Hummba, as our official brand ambassadors.
Founder of Hummba.com Mark Allewell hung out with 6 foot tall Matthew and the ever charismatic Benni in Johannesburg recently and the boys look just as excited as we all are here at Hummba.com.
