The Best Way to Explore Amsterdam-On Foot

Amsterdam is by nature a walking city. Nowhere else will you find so many points of interest within a single square kilometre. Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands with impressive architecture, lovely canals that criss cross the city, great shopping and friendly people, who nearly all speak English well. There is something for everyone here, from culture and history to exciting nightlife and the relaxing charm of an old European city.

A point of interest worth noting while on your Amsterdam walking tour is the Jordaan District. The Jordaan is the most sung about neighbourhood of Amsterdam and is famous for its cafés, restaurants, shops, markets, narrow streets and - most of all - its atmosphere. The Jordaan was once a typical working-class neighbourhood but over the years has been descended upon by students, artisans and other life-loving bohemians.

And of course, a trip to Amsterdam wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the Red Light District. This is the oldest part of the city and prostitution is limited to certain streets, mainly side streets and alleys but the district is considered to include the canals and some adjoining streets. The area has many sex shops and peep show bars and is a favourite for bachelors celebrating a stag night.

Although the nightly entertainment is what this part of the city if famous for, it is a residential district and has many bars and restaurants and also includes historic buildings and museums. This is also where the oldest church in Amsterdam is situated, the Netherlands gothic Oude Kerk.

The Van Gogh Museum is another unique experience when on an Amsterdam walking tour. The museum houses the largest collection of paintings by Vincent Van Gogh in the world. It gives visitors the opportunity to see the artist’s developments throughout the years and compare his works to other artists form the 19th century all housed in this collection. The museum also holds an extensive collection of exhibitions on various subjects from 19th century art history.

An Amsterdam walking tour comes highly recommended and Hummba’s audio guide Amsterdam will pinpoint everything from the most popular attractions to the little gems that simply can’t be missed. An example of one of these little gems are the engraved gable stones. Before house numbers were introduced on canal houses during Napoleons occupation, engraved gable stones indicating the resident’s trade or profession served as identification purposes and some can still be seen today.
